Every year, we work with South Shore Community Action Council (SSCAC) on their annual food drive, Backpack Food for Kids. We're asking all players and families who attend the Winter College Showcase to bring some non-perishible food items for donation.
For many children, the food they receive at school is their only meal of the day. To ensure children have the basic food and nutrition they need to focus and fully participate in school, our Backpack Food for Kids Initiative partnered with teachers, administrators, and parents at 12 schools in Plymouth and Middleborough. At our Food Distribution Center, our volunteers sorted through food donations and set aside “child-friendly” foods specifically for our Backpack initative. Each week, PTA volunteers from our partner schools picked up this dedicated food and brought it back to their respective schools to fill discrete backpacks for children to take home each Friday. In FY18, over 475 school children received backpacks of food to ensure they had enough to eat during weekends and school vacations. Through our Backpack Food for Kids initiative, we distributed 28,566 pounds of food. Anecdotally, we learned from teachers and school nurses that children are less lethargic and more focused in the classroom, and fewer children went to the nurses complaining of “stomach ache.”
